By 2050, this segment is expected to reach 347 million, accounting for 21% of the total population. The Ageing Fest acted as a catalyst for meaningful discussions, fostering collaboration amongst all stakeholders, government, investors, and businesses committed to transforming India’s care eco system for seniors. During the insightful sessions, the private sector was identified as a key player in addressing the rising demand for senior housing and healthcare, balancing profitability with social impact through strategic investments and partnerships. Speakers spoke about how tailored financial products like retirement plans and annuities are essential, and also voiced the need to build a sustainable care ecosystem with trained caregivers. Technology, or AgeTech, emerged as a transformative force, offering innovations like wearable health monitors, AI caregivers, and telehealth. I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to McKinsey for their invaluable contribution as our knowledge partner, to JLL for their significant role as our research partner and for the valuable insights shared in the report, and to Times of India for their support as the event’s digital partner. Highlights from the 5th ASLI Ageing Fest

A Holistic Approach to Senior Care and Financial Planning

The senior care sector is gaining recognition for its pivotal role in society, emphasizing the need for collective contributions toward its growth and sustainability. Viewed as a long-term business rather than just a shelter service, the focus is shifting toward creating sustainable and meaningful solutions that cater not only to today’s needs but also to the evolving demands of future generations.

Financial planning emerges as a cornerstone of retirement security, with an emphasis on saving and investing over the years. Large banks and institutions are seen as vital in managing long-term savings and investments, offering reliability and stability for ageing individuals. At the same time, the focus acknowledges the dual necessity of addressing the top 1-5% of the population who are paying clients while keeping broader societal efforts in mind.

Investments remain critical, with confidence placed in existing financial instruments, given the limited viable alternatives. This financial prudence aligns with a forward-looking approach to building solutions that will evolve over the next 15-18 years, ensuring gradual growth and adaptation in senior care.

Local solutions tailored to the Indian market are seen as essential, advocating for products and services that address regional needs and preferences. Meanwhile, technology emerges as a transformative tool to enhance senior care services and financial planning, offering innovative methods to improve the quality of life for seniors.

Together, these elements underscore a vision for a secure, sustainable, and progressive senior care ecosystem, grounded in thoughtful financial practices and a commitment to innovation.

The panel shed light on critical aspects of senior living and financial solutions for aging populations. They emphasized the urgent need to raise awareness about reverse mortgages, challenging societal norms where parents prioritize leaving assets to their children, and called for financial institutions to step up in promoting this often-underutilized option.

The discussion also highlighted the transformative role global practices can play in the Indian senior living sector, advocating for a balanced approach that offers both affordability and personalization to bridge the gap between luxury and basic services.

Additionally, the panel stressed the importance of integrating senior living into the broader framework of affordable housing to make it accessible to more individuals. Addressing regional imbalances, with the market predominantly concentrated in South India, was another key focus. With the demand for senior living and care units projected to rise exponentially—from 1,100 units per annum pre-COVID to an estimated 2.3 million by 2030—concerted efforts are needed to meet the growing needs of this sector.

The second roundtable explored private capital opportunities in the expanding senior living and care sector, shedding light on the immense potential and challenges within this evolving space.

The discussion highlighted the need for transformational ideas, innovative engineering, and robust financial models to effectively scale senior living projects. It was noted that while the sector remains below the radar in India, private capital can play a significant role in accelerating growth by addressing these gaps. The importance of leveraging advanced technology and vast data to provide continuous and impactful care was underscored, emphasizing solutions that empower customers and foster trust. This reflects a market poised for innovation, demanding a focus on creating meaningful and sustainable solutions for seniors.

The senior care industry thrives on the dedication of doctors, nurses, social workers, researchers, and volunteers who ensure seniors receive compassionate and dignified care. It also demands innovation from researchers and design thinkers to develop solutions tailored to the evolving needs of the elderly.

This insightful session explored how to attract talent to the senior care sector and build the capacity to provide dignified care for our seniors. With a focus on making senior care a mainstream and fulfilling career path, the discussion laid the groundwork for a brighter future for senior care in India.

A roundtable discussion focused on AgeTech and its potential to revolutionize senior care and living. Experts highlighted the pivotal role technology plays in enhancing the quality of life for seniors, especially in an aging nation like India.

Automation and global innovations are becoming key to ensuring seniors’ health and safety, reducing reliance on manpower. The conversation also explored cutting-edge advancements, such as humanoids designed for eldercare, emphasizing their role in providing social companionship and compassionate assistance beyond physical aid. Addressing funding challenges, panelists noted that AgeTech investments require diverse capital approaches, combining venture capital, government initiatives, and consumer-driven funding to fully unlock its transformative potential.
